Device Free Dinners

Recently, Will Ferrell starred in a series of PSAs that encourage families to participate in device-free dinners. Not only are they funny, they are poignant. You get a sense of the frustration from the family that is depicted with Will Ferrell’s character.

View more of the videos here.

Common Sense Media produced the video and has been promoting #devicefreedinner for a couple of years now. In addition, you can find resources to help your family at thefamilydinnerproject.org.

Create a Quiz Using Any Video

EDpuzzle is my go to for adding questions to videos. However, iSLCollective has a similar tool with some different options. It does not seem to capture the results, but that might be a feature in the near future.

#DeviceFreeDinner Challenge

As a school, we are proud of our use of technology to enhance and enrich learning. We also value time that is device-free for face-to-face discussions, connecting with nature and reflection. Our educators strive to find the proper balance of technology use and device-free time. I’m sure most families do at home as well.

I want to encourage families to have device-free dinners. Most parents know the value of having family dinners. Not only does it nourish the body, but the brain and spirit, too. For many, devices are not wanted at dinner but they still find their way to the table. Time to make a change. When your family has dinner, put the devices away for 30 minutes. Take this challenge. It will help you make the change. Let us know how you do.
